Brother James Monroe

(our 5th president)

Brother James was a lieutenant in the Continental Army.  In 1775 at the age of 17, he with 24 other students from the College of William and Mary raided the Governor's Palace of all the arms (the palace was also the armory) for the Williamsburg militia.  Brother Monroe was wounded at the Battle of Trenton.

After the war

  • he studied law under Thomas Jefferson.

  • Championed and assisted in the writing of the "Bill of Rights".

  • Is remembered for the "Monroe Doctrine".

Considered the last of the Founding Fathers, he went to that Undiscovered Country on July 4th, 1831, exactly 5-years to the day after Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.

Painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware.

He is depicted holding the flag in the famous painting of Washington Crossing the Delaware.
